CNC lathe chuck jaws and build-to-print precision machined parts
MATERIALS

Material decisions begin with the exact grade.

We review material family, grade, condition, stock form, geometry, finish and evidence requirements together. Availability and process suitability are confirmed at RFQ stage.

RFQ CATEGORIES

Common material families we can review.

These material families are common starting points for RFQ review. Grade, temper, hardness, stock size and certificate availability are confirmed for each order.

Aluminum Alloys

State grade and temper, appearance zones and anodizing needs.

Carbon & Alloy Steels

State grade, delivery condition, heat treatment and hardness.

Stainless Steels

State grade, corrosion context and passivation or finish needs.

Copper & Brass

State alloy, conductivity relevance and cosmetic requirements.

Engineering Plastics

State resin grade, color, stability and service conditions.

WHAT TO SPECIFY

A usable material callout prevents rework.

If a standard permits multiple grades or conditions, identify which alternatives are acceptable before quotation.

Standard + grade

Include ASTM, EN, DIN, JIS, GB or customer material designation.

Condition

Temper, annealed state, pre-hard condition or required final hardness.

Certificate

State whether a CoC, mill certificate or batch traceability is required.

Special process

Define heat treatment, coating, plating, anodizing, passivation or black oxide.

Dimensional allowance

Identify dimensions affected by heat treatment or surface build-up.

Appearance criteria

Mark cosmetic surfaces, color limits, masking and acceptable variation.

MATERIAL + FINISH REVIEW

Surface treatment is part of the tolerance plan.

Complementary surface treatments can be coordinated locally or through qualified partners. The treatment specification, dimensional allowance and inspection requirements must be defined before quotation and production planning.

RFQ topicWhy it mattersUseful input
Coating build-upCan change fits, threads, bores and datum relationshipsThickness range, masked areas and post-process measurement plan
Heat treatmentCan change distortion, stock allowance and grinding sequenceHardness range, case depth, condition and certificate need
Cosmetic finishNeeds a visual standard rather than subjective wordingColor reference, grain direction, protected faces and sample approval
Material substitutionCan change strength, corrosion, machining and complianceWritten list of acceptable alternatives or no-substitution instruction
FAQ

Material questions before quotation.

Can you recommend a cheaper substitute?

We can suggest commonly available alternatives for discussion. Production uses the material grade approved in the final RFQ.

Can material certificates be supplied?

Yes. State the certificate and traceability requirement in the RFQ so it can be included in material sourcing and quotation.

Can you coordinate heat treatment and surface treatment?

Yes, for accepted parts through a reviewed complementary process route. Specification, allowances, masking, certificates, appearance criteria and post-process inspection must be agreed where relevant.
